A brand new year! Let’s get it off to a great start with positive intentions and empowering goals to aim for- one self-compassionate step at a time.
So we are welcoming in a brand new month and a brand new year and I am hoping to share so much with you this year.
Stepping stones – a four step approach to goal setting.
Setting goals and intentions is a powerful way to focus your attention on all that you want so that you can live in the moment as I try and practice too, with joy, and gratitude for our precious human life and all the beauty this world has to offer. However, we don’t want to take big hefty strides all at once, small sustainable successes lead to achieving the bigger goals and dreams.
As we set off on the journey once more, the beginning of the year is such a good time to reflect back on all you achieved and gained in the year before and all that you are aiming for this year. I often offer tips for this and on 5th I am offering a whole day retreat to enable you to really take time to focus on you and all that you would like to achieve so that you can feel fulfilled and excited in each new day.
This year I am focusing on looking at each area of life we want to improve or maintain and this will include health, the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual, and relational aspects of our lives and how we are meeting our needs and living to our full potential. I think a good starting point is Kristin Neff’s exercise on identifying what we really want .
We can also take a look out how we practice self compassion in daily life and the different aspects of our lives where this is an important factor to help us live in accord with our core values. You can take Kristin’s self- compassion test here. I will be sharing more on self-compassion in daily life and living in accord with your core values on the January new year day retreat.
By setting our intentions and focusing on our goals we are turning away from what we don’t want and looking towards each step.
Sometimes what is required is radical positive change and this requires a radical positive approach such as decluttering and getting rid of everything that no longer serves us or is useful. We all need guidance, support and courage at some point- especially if we feel we’ve hit rock bottom, or we are not where we want to be and no longer want to be where we are. There is an abundance of help, love, and joy waiting for us all- it is a question of taking the first step and then a few more.
At the start of a new year It is a good time to map the future mindfully and focus your intention to achieve success in alignment with your core values- i.e. that which gives meaning to your life and makes you happy.
Step one- recognise the need for change -look at all the areas of your life that you would like to improve on
Step two – make a choice to change and set out your intention for change in writing
Step three – begin to take action with small but manageable steps- so, for example, if you want to be physically fitter in 2019- rather than joining a gym and trying to go every day, why not aim to walk for twenty minutes each day and spend time in nature
Step four- continually review and tweak your intentions and goals month by month or week by week and work towards letting go of limiting beliefs and the strong voice of your ‘inner critic.
Quite often at this time of year many people are suffering from the excess of the festive season and the intensity of relationships and the weak spots that the festive season has highlighted. Jack Kornfield offers some guidance on this which I am sharing here

January 2019 a new year, new beginnings, time for a change or a little more of the same? what do you truly want for yourself and for others? what is your deepest dearest wish? What is the first step towards that wish becoming reality? Positive psychology and most faith based traditions suggest that what we focus on becomes our reality, so let’s make good things happen in January 2019! With a particular focus on awareness of our core values we can achieve all that brings comfort and, peace, and deep well-being.
I am setting my intention and focusing on a new clinical practice in Hale Cheshire and completing some online offerings, video blogs,and a book! So a busy year for me! And, the wheels are already in motion. You can follow my journey from intention to realisation in 2019 on my upcoming blogs and reflections and here in my newsletter as the months progress- I will be setting up a Facebook page for ‘worthy intentions’ where we can share our goals, dreams, and intentions, and where I hope to support you with any blocks along the way- this will be a closed group that you can sign up for in the new year so watch this space!
As we look forward to 2019 I am really excited to be getting the year off to a positive start and the New Year day retreat is proving popular but I have a few places left. This is a very powerful retreat and helps set the scene for the rest of the year- helping you to focus your intention on what you want to achieve and I look forward to sharing this day with you.

The Mindful Self compassion programme is waiting for you!
To build resilience and emotional strength, The Mindful self-compassion training first dates for 2019 are now on offer and registration is now open!
It is good to remember and be drawn to the fact that in amidst the pain and suffering there is always light and enduring beauty when we look mindfully and with gratitude for all that we love that surrounds us in each present moment, all that we accomplish, and all that this precious human life we are given can enjoy.
All MSC courses will now take place in Disley on Saturdays and Adlington Village Hall South East Cheshire on Friday afternoons. The original ‘six weekly gathering’ will continue to be held at Disley Quaker meeting in East Cheshire which borders with the High peak. Other gatherings will take place in South Cheshire also as the year progresses.

2019 sees the launch of The Mindful Compassion partnership. I am thrilled and proud to be a part of the team and I hope to bring you lots of information in my next newsletter. We are a partnership of mindfulness practitioners dedicated to the well-being of others. I will be sharing lots of information about the partnership in the weeks and months ahead so there will be a dedicated page on my website coming soon. For now here are the first offerings from the partnership. These retreats are led by Ann Burgoyne and David Oldham and are the first of many.

I am aiming to take this forward into Priorslegh and other East Cheshire GP practices and I am in the process of writing to the practice managers to see if we can offer this to their patients – so if you are in Macclesfield, Knutsford, Alderley, Chelford, or Congleton then these workshops may be offered at your local GP practice with some look and positive goal setting intentions.
Other courses to look out for: ‘Emotional resilience’, and ‘Mindful compassion for well-being’ ‘New unique programmes of 4 week-weekly training and personal development incorporating the latest research based approaches including ‘compassion and mindfulness’ and imaginal exposure’ for valuable and lasting lifestyle changes and well-being.
