Hello again and welcome to my July newsletter

What an incredible journey I have just returned from! The MSC teacher festival in the Netherlands brought together a global community working towards helping people develop self-compassion and emotional resilience. I was deeply moved and humbled by the work from around the world and the privilege of connecting with so many like-minded people. It reminded me of how as humans, we are socially connected beings. Our need for acceptance is great, to feel connected is vitally important, not only for our emotional well-being but often our very survival can depend upon it.
Mindful self- compassion as a tool and a programme for change has shown to be powerful and effective for both men and women and Kristin Neff presented a powerful and engaging account of the Yin and Yang of self compassion.

I have shared some photos here from my trip and you can see me with the beautiful Kristin Neff,Chris Germer,and the wise and compassionate director of The Centre for Mindful self-compassion Steve Hicks

I have had the opportunity to reflect on some big changes occurring in my life and how mindfulness and self-compassion practice can help me stay strong and safe on the roller coaster of life . As humans, being creatures of pattern and habit, one thing we love and crave is certainty. However, one thing is for certain, and causes much of our suffering, and that is uncertainty. This can be a small a deal as “will my connection get me to Amsterdam on time, to will everything be ok when I get home- yes we globalise and catastrophise very quickly. It’s not our fault. As Paul Gilbert among others points out- the way our brain is designed is for our survival rather than our happiness- it is an old design joining with a relativity new part and we are constantly adapting to the world around us and the information it provides.

As Rick Hanson says the mind is designed to be “Teflon for the good and Velcro for the negative’ So, this summer we have had extraordinary and prolonged sunshine –  this is wonderful, but we are conscious that we need balance and above all water. As the hose pipe bans look set to come into force next month and we recognise that the heat can affect our sleep and too much causes us to burn. So we will always find the bad in the good- but can we redress the balance so that we can really appreciate the good- the good about the world around us, and in ourselves-too often we are quick to criticise ourselves when we’ve made a mistake and brush off any compliments and achievements- However, if we can let go of the striving for things to be ‘other than they are, and this includes ourselves, and accept ourselves just as and practice equanimity for the things we cannot change. Then, we are going some way to have a happier life- don’t take my word for it though! Check out Rick Hanson’s work

‘Journeys and Adventures: Your life story..then, now and onwards’

“Journeys, adventures,your story” – a series of two ‘Natural awakening’ day-retreats

Summer and I are back together and have a wonderful new two-day series of uplifting and empowering retreats.

These can be stand alone or you can complete both and there will be ‘home practice’ in between

The practices of mindfulness, movement, meditation, and self-compassion are brought together in a culmination of exercises that will refresh, replenish and rejuvenate.

Where: At Disley Quaker meeting House

When: Saturday 4 August and Saturday 1 September
10.00am – 4.45pm:
Cost £50.00 payable in advance of each day secures your place. If you complete the two days as a series  – £85 for both payable in advance of the first day secures your place.

Lunch: As always please bring vegan food to share.

A Natural Awakening Series of 2 workshops facilitated by Summer Phillips and Annette Boden.

“Do you wish to throw off that which holds you back, such as habits and thoughts which repeat? Would you like to step into achieving dreams and enhance the story you are creating? Or just celebrate the creations you have weaved thus far? If so, then these days are for you!
Summer and I have some brand -new practices and I have the latest updates on equanimity and self- acceptance from the world of neuroscience and self-compassion. Helping you to move towards more of what you want in your life and how to attain it.

Attending both sessions to chart progression is recommended yet, if unable, you can also attend a single day as a stand- alone session. The second date is Sat 1st Sept 2018.

These will be practical and reflective days, please bring a notebook (one you can keep handy in your day to day life), a pen, and a comfy cushion or yoga mat (there are cushions at the Quaker House, and a blanket if you feel the cold when meditating.
We will take some physical movement; however, this is NOT a yoga day and is suitable for anyone of any ability 🙂

New for the summer! Relaxation classes

Where: In The Copper room at Pinches medical in Macclesfield– all welcome.
I am so thrilled to be able to offer this popular class once again and now in Macclesfield! The classes will have started! I am so thrilled.

The classes run on a Tuesday evening from 6.30-7.15pm. Download the pdf poster here for more information Come and enjoy a weekly session of deep relaxation, with mindfulness, self-compassion, and guided visualisation. The Copper room, which can be found on the first floor of the beautiful Charles Roe House is a beautifully setting that naturally lends its self to uplifting courses, classes, and workshops.
The cost is paid up front on a four-weekly basis and is £20 for Pinches members and £30 for non-member. Ad-hoc sessions need to be booked early on the day and at the latest 5pm if possible and these are £8. To register your interest or book a place get in touch asap. Mindful self -Compassion programme

All MSC courses will now take place in Disley on Saturdays and Adlington Village Hall South East Cheshire on Friday afternoons. The original ‘six weekly gathering’ will continue to be held at Disley Quaker meeting in East Cheshire which borders with the High peak. Other gatherings will take place in South Cheshire also as the year progresses.

From January 2018 the ‘gatherings’ are now available to anyone who has trained in MSC and who wishes to keep connected to the practice and be supported with their practice and ongoing journey in the warm and friendly company of those who are also walking the path.

The dates for 2018 at Disley are as follows:
27 January 10.00-12.30pm, 17 March, 21 April, 2 June, 14 July, 25 August, BREAK FOR AUTUMN WEEKEND RETREAT AT WILLERLSEY, 20 October, 6 December 10-3 for a special extended Christmas gathering.
NB: If you would like to attend any of the gatherings  and have not completed MSC with me please get in touch with me in the first instance.

Corporate and Community well-being

This year I have continued to focus on  corporate and community well-being as I continue with teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion programme (please get in touch if you would like me to send out  information and application form for courses starting in Summer 2018) and NEW FOR 2018:  ‘Emotional resilience’, and ‘Mindful compassion for well-being’ ‘New unique programmes of 4 week-weekly  training and personal development  incorporating the latest research based approaches including ‘compassion and mindfulness’ and imaginal exposure’ for valuable and lasting lifestyle changes and well-being.
I have found that motivation and intention are powerful instigators of positive lifestyle change and I found this article on ‘the science of achieving your goals’ interesting and thought I would share it here with you.

MSC for teens and Young adults

I am offering MSC for teens next Spring 2018 and places are limited to 10 teens so register your interest asap and I will send out some information.  This course is the official  ‘Making friends with yourself’  MSC for teens and young adults. Research has already shown the benefits and positive outcomes for this training and I believe it will be the next great move forward in our civilisation towards compassion and emotional resilience. I have had the privilege of training in Dublin in November 2016 with Loraine Hobbs and Karen Bluth- 2 remarkable people who are setting the bar for transforming the lives of teens and young adults, so they can flourish as adults- I wish this course had been around for my generation- it really is a game changer in developing self-confidence and emotional resilience. Watch this space for further information or get in touch to discuss how I can bring this to your school or community college.
