Hello and welcome to my February newsletter 2019

In this month of Valentines, the spotlight falls on relationships and most importantly, the Loving connected presence we can have with ourselves.
Relationships are key to human functioning and survival of the species- we are social beings and work well in groups and communities, and in our closer relationships with friends and family. However, this does not mean our relationships are easy and don’t have to be worked at and nurtured-they do.
Our most important relationship is with ourself- how can we love others if we do not love ourself first?

In the mindful self- compassion programme we share research findings that support the positive changes we make in our relationships with others when we practice self-compassion. Research shows that self-compassionate people tend to be more caring and supportive in interpersonal relationships (Neff & Beretvas,2013; Wayment, West & Craddock, 2016) , and are more compassionate towards others (Neff and Pommier, 2013)

Take a look at this recent article  and I love Jack Kornfield’s message

Have a listen to some of Kristin Neff’s excellent TED Talks on self-compassion here

Before we are able to offer loving connected presence to other beings- we first have to develop a loving and nurturing relationship towards ourselves, and this is the tricky part- the hardest part.
In western culture we  are great at giving compassion to others – in fact it is culturally encouraged!
We have global, political relationships with our neighbours then our country counties work and friendships intimate and family we are socially connected beings but how do we connect with others if there is a disconnect with ourselves ? Mindful Self-Compassion  teaches us to develop a healthy relationship with ourselves and research shows with self-compassion we have healthier relationships with others.

I teach the Mindful self-compassion course throughout the year and the next Mindful self compassion programme dates are coming up this Spring 2019 so check this page here for the next dates!

Some essential self-care
So we start within and it’s important that we recognise to be fully functional connected and present with the world around us and each other we first need to understand ourselves and accept ourselves and take good care of ourselves . We can do this in a number of ways and it is important that we meet our needs for our survival first and foremost through nutrition, sleep exercise , maintaining gods physical health and essentially emotionally addressing  and managing stress so that we have firmer foundations with which to grow and flourish from.

Last month  I had the good fortune to meet Dr Rangan Chaterjee and attend an excellent talk about stress. I have also watched the film heal and one of the key elements to longevity and wellness is stress management and bringing our mind and body in to a state of harmonious well-being.
