This is a particularly lovely time of year as the blossoms come into full bloom and we see some sunshine. This is a time to really enjoy and savour the beauty of nature around us and look forward to long, sunny, summer days. I have news of events to share this month and some tips on sensible drinking on these warm Spring days.

New for the summer! Relaxation classes
Where: In The Copper room at Pinches medical in Macclesfield– all welcome.
I am so thrilled to be able to offer this popular class once again and now in Macclesfield! The classes will generally run on a Tuesday evening from 6.30-7.15pm. The July start date and time are TBC and you can book a block of 4-6 sessions upfront for a discount! Come and enjoy a weekly session of deep relaxation, with mindfulness, self-compassion, and guided visualisation. The Copper room, which can be found on the first floor of the beautiful Charles Roe House is a beautifully setting that naturally lends its self to uplifting courses, classes, and workshops. We have just had Mental Health awareness week and the focus this year has been on stress. If you are suffering from stress and would like some help do get in touch as I specialise in stress and anxiety management and I am sure I will be able to help you. I can see you at a variety of clinics during the week.
As we steer our steady course through the year, we find ourselves almost at the half way point. So, how are the goals and plans going that you made at the beginning of the year? Are you still on track? Generally, this time of year can start to feel more relaxed as the sun shines and we step outside and it is important to build on this to strengthen our emotional resilience and physical well-being.
On that note, just a gentle reminder about safe drinking and getting ready for the summer.
Alcohol – know your limit and enjoy healthier habits to relax and socialise
As Spring is in full swing and we start to look forward to summertime, it is a time to relax and have fun after the long winter months. We can enjoy the summer happily, healthily, and safely. To do this, it is worth being aware of a few facts about alcohol excesses and some top tips to avoid the problems they cause.
Alcohol -related deaths in the UK in 2015 stood at 8,578.
There are many harmful effects that excess alcohol has on the body. These include: Liver Cirrhosis, Cancer, Strokes, High blood pressure, diabetes, fertility problems, impotence, low mood, anxiety, and depression.
Around 4% of cancers in the UK are caused by excess alcohol intake. World-wide one in five alcohol -related deaths are caused by cancer.
Excess alcohol is also linked to: Dementia, Some forms of diabetes, depression, insomnia, Hypertension, brain damage, breast cancer.

In the short term, alcohol causes a high number of sick days off work due to hangovers caused by dehydration, low blood sugar, and poisoning. Binge drinking can cause irregular heartbeat, and, in some cases, sudden death, known as ‘holiday heart syndrome’
So, what can we do to enjoy the summer and relax, without drinking to excess?
The most recent guidelines published from the UK Chief Medical Officer suggest that, for both men and women, to keep health risk to a minimum, it is safest not to drink more than 14 units per week on a regular basis.
Some top tips
- Relax- unwind at the end of the working day with a walk or a shower, mindfulness practice and meditation instead of reaching for that first drink. Unwind first.
- Drink plenty of water to re-hydrate, especially in between alcoholic drinks when out, and before going to bed.
- Eat before you go out to reduce the effects of alcohol.
- Avoid getting into ‘rounds’ on nights out, skip rounds, or alternate with soft drinks such as fruit juice or sparkling water.
- Have more alcohol -free days to allow the body to recover and to keep your mood positive.
- Focus on time management and stress management – avoid using alcohol as a coping strategy…it doesn’t work.
- When socialising, drink slowly, drink less. You will remember all the highlights and think more clearly and positively the following day.

More events at Pinches medical!
Recently I have had the pleasure and privilege of co-facilitating two empowering workshops at Pinches medical. ‘optimising your health in your 40s and 50s was a huge success and we will be running this workshop again!
Also last week I was joined by our clinical lead and founder of Pinches Medical Dr Stephanie Jones as we prepared a group of teens for their revision and exam success. ‘True resilience’ a workshop for exam success will be run again and we are looking to offer emotional resilience courses this summer and throughout the year for students and young adults to help navigate their way through teens and the educational system healthily and confidently.

My professional focus and ethos continues to evolve and move towards a compassionate approach to well-being that offers new strategies physical and emotional comfort based on neuroscientific findings, and continuing research into chronic conditions such as Fibromyalgia and CFS.

The Willersley Castle Autumn retreat date is confirmed for this year 5-7 October 2018 and places are filling up fast! So please get in touch asap to book your place which is secured with a non-refundable but transferable deposit of £50.00. You can send me a cheque or pay via bacs
All MSC courses will now take place in Disley on Saturdays and Adlington Village Hall South East Cheshire on Friday afternoons. The original ‘six weekly gathering’ will continue to be held at Disley Quaker meeting in East Cheshire which borders with the High peak. Other gatherings will take place in South Cheshire also as the year progresses.
From January 2018 the ‘gatherings’ are now available to anyone who has trained in MSC and who wishes to keep connected to the practice and be supported with their practice and ongoing journey in the warm and friendly company of those who are also walking the path.
The dates for 2018 at Disley are as follows:
27 January 10.00-12.30pm, 17 March, 21 April, 2 June, 14 July, 25 August, BREAK FOR AUTUMN WEEKEND RETREAT AT WILLERLSEY, 20 October, 6 December 10-3 for a special extended Christmas gathering.

Corporate and Community well-being
This year I have continued to focus on corporate and community well-being as I continue with teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion programme (please get in touch if you would like me to send out information and application form for courses starting in Summer 2018) and NEW FOR 2018: ‘Emotional resilience’, and ‘Mindful compassion for well-being’ ‘New unique programmes of 4 week-weekly training and personal development incorporating the latest research based approaches including ‘compassion and mindfulness’ and imaginal exposure’ for valuable and lasting lifestyle changes and well-being.
I have found that motivation and intention are powerful instigators of positive lifestyle change and I found this article on ‘the science of achieving your goals’ interesting and thought I would share it here with you.
MSC for teens and Young adults
I am offering MSC for teens next Spring 2018 and places are limited to 10 teens so register your interest asap and I will send out some information. This course is the official ‘Making friends with yourself’ MSC for teens and young adults. Research has already shown the benefits and positive outcomes for this training and I believe it will be the next great move forward in our civilisation towards compassion and emotional resilience. I have had the privilege of training in Dublin in November 2016 with Loraine Hobbs and Karen Bluth- 2 remarkable people who are setting the bar for transforming the lives of teens and young adults, so they can flourish as adults- I wish this course had been around for my generation- it really is a game changer in developing self-confidence and emotional resilience.
